The Constitution of the French State – Vichy Regime: 1940 – 1944

Born in defeat, the Third Republic evolved, from its proclamation to its fall, in a context of confrontation with Germany. On July 10, 1940, faced with the German advance, the National Assembly delegated full powers on July 11 to Marshal Pétain who named himself  “Head of the French State” de facto putting an end to the Third Republic.
